Corneal Transplants

Specialists with more than 35 years of experience in advanced corneal transplant techniques

Our Experience in Corneal Transplants

Instituto de Córnea S.A.S. was created to offer patients the most advanced technology in corneal transplantation. For more than 35 years we have evolved, refined, and implemented the best transplant techniques according to each corneal pathology.

We are one of Colombia’s most experienced ophthalmic centers in specialized transplant techniques, especially deep lamellar keratoplasty, which represents the most significant advancement in this field in recent decades.

Specialized Transplant Techniques

Three advanced approaches tailored to each type of corneal pathology

Advanced technique

Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK/DMEK)

The most important advance in recent decades

This has been the most important corneal transplant breakthrough in recent decades. It replaces only the inner layer (endothelium), which may be compromised after cataract surgery or by primary endothelial disorders.

Key characteristics:

  • Rapid visual recovery

Visual results within weeks, not months.

  • Minimal incision without sutures

Only a tiny incision is required.

  • Maximum surgical safety

The anterior corneal structure remains intact.

Specialized technology:

Instituto de Córnea S.A.S. has the technology required to prepare endothelial donor tissue received from the eye bank. This tissue is implanted using an air bubble for 24 to 48 hours.

Primary indications:

  • Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy
  • Fuchs endothelial dystrophy
  • Endothelial failure after cataract surgery
  • Corneal edema due to endothelial dysfunction
Comprehensive technique

Penetrating Keratoplasty

For cases with full-thickness corneal damage

Our technique of choice for patients with total corneal damage. It replaces all corneal layers when the full thickness is compromised.

Procedure characteristics:

  • Full replacement

    All corneal layers are transplanted.

  • Specialized follow-up

    Requires frequent, specialized monitoring.

  • Gradual recovery

Recovery process of 1 to 2 years.

Recovery timeline:

1–2 weeks Initial healing
3–6 months Graft stabilization
1–2 years Full visual recovery

Primary indications:

  • Dense corneal leucomas
  • Corneal perforations
  • Severe corneal degenerations
  • Failure of selective techniques

Tissue Preparation

Specialized technology for optimal results

Instituto de Córnea S.A.S. has the necessary technology to prepare endothelial donor tissue received from the eye bank. This specialized process is crucial for the success of endothelial transplants.

Preparation process:

  • Quality evaluation of donor tissue
  • Sterile preparation with specialized techniques
  • Microscopic assessment of the endothelium
  • Technique-specific preparation (DSAEK/DMEK)
  • Pre-implant quality control

Tissue preparation laboratory

When is a transplant necessary?

  • Advanced keratoconus that no longer responds to other treatments
  • Corneal opacities that significantly limit vision
  • Endothelial failure after cataract surgery
  • Inherited corneal dystrophies
  • Scarring from infections or trauma

Recovery timelines

Deep lamellar: Visual recovery in 3–6 months
Endothelial: Visual recovery in 4–8 weeks
Penetrating: Complete recovery in 1–2 years

Post-operative care

  • Strict use of prescribed medications
  • Eye protection as indicated
  • Scheduled medical check-ups
  • Avoid risk-prone activities
  • Long-term follow-up

Success rates

95% Deep lamellar
90% Endothelial
85% Penetrating
